Product Managers and Product Owners, you are chronically short on time. Here are practical use cases for generative AI to save you time and enhance the quality of your work.

Product Managers (PMs) and Product Owners (POs), you are chronically short on time. So I will be brief since you probably do not have time to read this…

Appropriate application of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini, have the potential to save you time and enhance the quality of your work. Here are some practical use cases to get you started:

    Product Vision Ideation 💡

Generative AI can assist you in brainstorming sessions by generating ideas for shaping your product vision, MVP scope, and even your unique selling points. Try this prompt:

"What innovative vision can support a new [product type] targeting [specific audience]?"

    Automated User Story Generation 📝

Writing detailed user stories and requirements can be time-consuming. Generative AI can draft initial versions based on user inputs, freeing up valuable time for PMs and POs to focus on refining and prioritizing the backlog. Try this prompt:

"Generate a user story for a [feature] that addresses [user need]."

    Prototyping and Design 🎨

AI tools can create wireframes and prototypes, providing visual representations of product ideas quickly. This accelerates the design phase and allows for early user testing and feedback, ultimately leading to better user experiences. Try this prompt:

"Create a wireframe for a [type of app] with features like [feature 1], [feature 2], and [feature 3]."

NB: ChatGPT-4o provides Wireframe Sketches in Markdown to copy/paste.

    Data-Driven Decision Making 📊

Generative AI can analyze vast amounts of data to uncover patterns and insights. PMs and POs can leverage these insights to make informed decisions about product direction and feature prioritization. Try this prompt:

"Analyze [attach user data as CSV file] to identify trends and suggest which features to prioritize."

    Personalized User Experiences 🤝

AI can help create personalized experiences by generating content, recommendations, and features tailored to individual users. This level of personalization can drive user engagement and satisfaction, giving products a competitive edge. Try this prompt:

"Generate personalized recommendations for users of a [type of app] based on their previous interactions [attach user data as CSV file or similar]."

    Efficient A/B Testing 🔍

AI can automate the creation and analysis of A/B tests, providing actionable insights on what works best for users. This helps in making data-driven decisions quickly, optimizing product features and user interfaces. Try this prompt:

"Design an A/B test plan for the new feature [feature name] to determine its impact on user engagement."

As a follow-up, you can ask the AI to suggest specific metrics/KPIs to follow up on user engagement.

    A Note of Caution

AI is just a tool, so it should be applied judiciously and in harmony with human expertise, ethical usage, risk & compliance requirements, and current laws (such as the AI Act). PMs and POs must remain vigilant in ensuring that the outputs generated by these AI models are accurate, unbiased, and aligned with organizational goals and ethical standards.

This is the first article of a series to explore the possibilities that generative AI brings to Agile roles.
